Sometimes one may discover lying in a gutter, or on a performance hall stage after a show, a piece of paper or index card which has written upon it an enigmatic list — what performers call their Set List. This they keep close at hand and glance at from time to time to ensure that, throughout the evening, their show stays on the course they have carefully plotted.
