Item specifics
Original/Reproduction: Original Listed By: Dealer or Reseller
Date of Creation: c. 1437
This is a rare, original, masterwork by one of the most famous artists of all time, Fra Angelico. Why, you’re wondering, if this work is so stupendous (which it is), am I selling it? It is because my dear wife, for whom I shelled out something in the very high six/low seven figures in order to present her with a special anniversary gift, says it’s “tainted.”
From the Renaissance. “Tainted.” You see, this historically significant treasure was previously held and sold by an institution, certain members of which are accused of doing things which everyone (including myself) agrees are horrendous and indefensible. And then were covered up by their superiors.
So she says it has a “history.” (And she “forbids” our dealer from handling it.) I have patiently explained to her that she is in error. Its PREVIOUS OWNERS have a history. “But,” she says, “the money goes to their compensation fund.” Which is true. But I say: All the better. That just means it will go to people who deserve it and can benefit from it!
I see it as a win-win. We get a piece of history, and the victims get compensation. She sees it as collusion with Evil. Great. “Surprise!” indeed.
So all of you not married to my wife: let the bidding begin.
Paypal preferred.
Questions and answers about this item
Q: Whom specifically did you purchase this from originally? Thanks!
A: Let’s just say you’ve heard of this organization, as have billions of people all over the world. For thousands of years.
Q: Why hasn’t a museum bought this?
A: Because their acquisitions department is controlled by boards of directors consisting of people like my wife.
Q: Why is the floor price so low?
A: Because I’m on the hook to Christie’s for a million and, FYI, another 20% of that on top as their commission. I just want to stop the bleeding and bail.
Q: Won’t the investment potential of this item be harmed as the market is flooded with these kinds of similarly “tainted” works? And the more the prices are driven down, the more the original owner will be forced to sell, creating a downward spiral of value?
A: If you say so. You know what? Never mind. Just forget the whole thing. Either buy it or don’t. I’ve had it.
